Lady with a Unicorn (c. 1505)

Galleria Borghese, Rome

Restoration work on the painting in 1959 revealed the image of a dog, even earlier than the unicorn, a symbol of chastity and conjugal fidelity. The original depiction of the dog can also be made out from an X-radiograph published by John Shearman in 1970. The young woman in the painting was a bride and this portrait was a wedding gift to the engaged couple from Raphael. It is said that the woman might be Giulia Farnese, mistress of Pope Alexander VI.
