Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun
Portrait of Joseph Vernet (1778)
Musée du Louvre, Paris
In her Souvenirs, Vigée Le Brun described how Vernet, the famous landscape and seascape painter, encouraged her artistic endeavors. He backed her admission to the Académie in 1783, supporting her against Jean-Baptiste Pierre, Premier Peintre du Roy, and his cabal, who did not want women to be admitted to the institution.
